Exactly what leaves your phone when you talk to Junie
The four steps a message takes, what is discarded, and the one thing that is kept.
When Junie's full brain is switched on, here is the whole journey of a message you type.
- Your message, and a structured summary of that day's tasks (their titles, times, and status), travel over an encrypted connection to our own server.
- Our server passes it to DigitalOcean's serverless AI inference, running in the United States.
- The model produces a reply.
- The reply comes back to you, and the content is discarded.
Which means, plainly
- It is not stored after your reply has been generated.
- It is not used to train any model. DigitalOcean runs this under a no-training, zero-retention policy.
- Our own backend logs counts and status codes, never what you wrote. We cannot read your conversations with Junie, by design rather than by promise.
- Your tasks themselves are never uploaded and stored. Only the summary needed to answer that one message is sent, and it goes the same way as the message.
The one thing that is kept
If you rate a Junie message with a thumb, or use Share today's chat with us, that content is kept and attached to your membership so we can read it and improve her. That is the only Junie content that survives, it only ever happens when you tap one of those buttons, and deleting your data deletes it.
On-device mode
If Junie is running on Apple Intelligence, nothing leaves your iPhone at all. If she is running on the built-in wording, there is no network involved whatsoever. See how Junie thinks.
